As I scrolled through my saved items a title jumped out at me: Hear the Prog-Rock Adaptation of H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds: The 1978 Rock Opera That Sold 15 Million Copies Worldwide
What????? Click. In short, the musical was produced by composer and musician, Jeff Wayne, in 1978. It never made it big in the United States, but it’s gained cult status in the UK. I’m a huge fan of science fiction in general, and H.G. Wells in particular, so I figured I’d give it a listen (even though I don’t like musicals).
The album consists of 149 songs and clocks in at 6 hours, so pace yourself! It’s certainly operatic, but also gets into funk and electric, so it’s fresh throughout. Richard Burton’s narration is wonderfully acted and takes you back to the days of radio, the way the story was initially told. The entire thing is epic, I’m not even done listening to it, but I wanted to share. Enjoy!
